It's Not Happening At The Zoo Anymore

A Bubbaworld Political Commentary

July 10, 2005

On July 7, 2005, one month to the day after voting to make the Tulsa Zoo the nation's only 'Christian Zoo', the Tulsa Parks and Recreation Board reversed itself and in a 3-1 vote decided to cancel plans for a Creationism exhibit.   The only dissenting vote was that of Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune.

It is undetermined whether the board's reversal was owing to a sudden outbreak of sanity or to the national and worldwide furor which its earlier vote generated.  And really it does not matter.  What does matter is that the Tulsa Parks and Recreation Board did the 'right thing'.  Its motivation in doing so is only secondary.

Media reports quoted Dan Hicks, the man behind the drive to Christianize the Tulsa Zoo, as stating he had no plans to take the matter to court. He also went on to state that others might do so.

Obviously this issue is not dead and will come back to haunt Tulsa in the future.  One can only hope that when it does sanity will once again prevail.

With the current turmoil in Tulsa city government odds are that the next battle over the Tulsa Zoo will come sooner rather than later.
