A Question of Priorities #1
In this section of Bubbaworld we reveal examples of events which should cause a reasonable person to question the priorities of both Oklahoma's Criminal Justice System and those that control it.
Washington County District Court, Bartlesville, Oklahoma
DA of Record in Gilliland Case: Scott Julian
Judge of Record in Gilliland Case: Janice P. Dreiling
DA of Record in Thomas Case: Shelley Clemens
Judge of Record in Thomas Case: Curtis L. Delapp
In October, 2004 two men charged with felony offenses appeared in Washington County District court for hearings in which the court set the bond amounts for the accused. In one case bond was set at $250,000, in the other bond was set in the amount of $7,500.
One of the accused, David Wade Gilliland is charged with three counts of first degree rape of a female child that was 5 years old at the time of the first alleged offense, the maiming of an adult female whom Gilliland is alleged to have attacked on two different occasions and possession of illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia.
The other accused, Nor T. Thomas is accused of using a steak knife in the armed robbery of a flower shop. The amount taken was $351 and the robbery victim was not physically harmed.
Which man do you think was held on the $250,000 bond?
If you answered Mr. Gilliland you would be wrong.
That's right, a man accused of raping a small child three times, maiming a woman for life and possession of illicit drugs was released on bond totaling $7,500 while the man accused of the flower shop heist was held on bond of $250,000.
In light of these startling examples, who would not be questioning the priorities of Oklahoma's criminal justice system?
